Pedro Nuno Santos spoke with journalists in Sines, Setúbal district, after being confronted by journalists with statements made the previous day by the Minister of State and Foreign Relations, Augusto Santos Silva, in an interview with TVI, during which he praised the mandate of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and considered that Ana Gomes is not a good presidential candidate to be supported by the PS.

Pedro Nuno Santos began by responding that his vote will be communicated at the time his party meets to discuss the presidential elections, “because that is where it will decide,” alluding to the meeting of the National Commission of the PS scheduled for the day. October 24, when the Socialists will define their position in relation to the elections to the Presidency of the Republic of 2021.

Before journalists, without ever touching names and without putting his words in terms of profile, Pedro Nuno Santos warned that “extremism is not confused with courage”, because “extremism is one thing”, but “the courage to say things as they are, to face them, it is quite another ”.

Pedro Nuno Santos also said that he likes “people, men or women, with courage and that they never make mistakes with what they have to be, people, workers, families, and always have the courage to face those who, above, more or less they were doing what they always wanted from our country ”.

“Bravery must be rewarded,” stressed the Minister of Infrastructure and former leader of the PS Aveiro Federation, warning then, with a series of messages within his party, that “people are not in a position to do the PS some things from time to time, being deputies to the EP, being candidates for the council or members of the National Secretariat, and then, from one moment to the next, start to be vilified because it doesn’t work for them.

Still in response to the same question about the positions defended by Augusto Santos Silva in matters of presidential elections, the former JS leader and former Secretary of State for Parliamentary Affairs also wanted to point out that “who decides who the PS supports are the party organs.”

“It is not the Government, it is not a member of the Government, it is the PS who decides who supports or stops supporting,” he stressed.

But Pedro Nuno Santos went further: “Not supporting the acting President of the Republic does not mean contempt, lack of respect, disloyalty. We live in a mature democracy and it was just what people and politicians needed to be upset because they did not have the support of this or that ”, he considered.

At the end of August, in an interview with the weekly Expresso, the Prime Minister defended that members of the Government should adopt a modest attitude regarding the issue of the presidential elections.

Today, in Sines, the Infrastructure Minister argued that he did not want to “be the only one” to talk about the presidential elections, but made an indirect allusion to the recent words of Augusto Santos Silva and the announcement by former socialist MEP Asna Gomes that will be a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic.

“We should all be silent, but from the moment [em] that we have a comrade speaking, another comrade to apply, it is time for the PS to join. And, as I am a partner of both, the candidate and those who wanted to comment, here is my “comment, he said.
