The country has 302 active outbreaks
There are 302 active outbreaks in the country, the majority in the North, all of them characterized by the health authorities, the Director General of Health said today in Parliament.
Until this Tuesday 123 foci were identified in the north, 33 in the center, 106 in Lisbon and the Tagus valley, 17 in the Alentejo and 23 in the Algarve. Graça Freitas explained in the Parliamentary Health Commission, in a hearing with the Labor and Social Security Commission.
“They are all typified. We know where they are and how it happened, be it at a wedding, a restaurant or a pilgrimage, and also who the close contacts are. “said the head of DGS, explaining that it is only after 28 days without new cases that the authorities consider that the outbreaks are resolved.
There are 51 active outbreaks in households.
The Director General of Health added that the available data points to 51 active outbreaks in homes across the country, of which 10 are in the North, two in the Center region, 35 in Lisbon and the Tagus Valley, three in the Alentejo and three in the Algarve.
Regarding the case of the Maria Inácia Vogado Perdigão Silva house in Reguengos de Monsaraz (Évora), where 18 people died (16 users, a household employee and a member of the community), Graça Freitas stated that “there was no inaction of the authorities “ and that “there were several visits” to check if the address was correcting the situations detected and applying the recommendations of the authorities.
To the deputies, Graça Freitas said that “even when there is a negative test, this does not guarantee that people are not incubating the disease.” “That is the great challenge,” said the official, highlighting that next winter “the country will not be the same” because “there are regions that are more affected in community terms and where the circulation of the virus is more active.”
Moderna vaccine shows good results in trials in older people
As winter approaches and infections rise, several European countries have adopted new restrictions to slow the spread of the new coronavirus, while pharmaceutical companies are racing against time to develop a vaccine against covid-19.
Moderna’s vaccine is one of the most advanced in clinical trials. The US biotech company released the results of phase 1 on Tuesday, based on provisional data. The findings suggest that mRNA-1273 “can generate neutralizing antibodies in the elderly and older adults at levels comparable to those generated in young adults.”
