Wesley Barnes is being sued by Sea View Resort after writing a negative review with a one-star rating on Tripadvisor, AFP reported. The hotel on the island of Koh Chang claims that the American wrote various reviews on different sites, smearing the resource.

“The team was not friendly. No one could smile,” wrote Wesley Barnes in the Tripadvisor review. “The restaurant manager was very rude and full of himself. He’s from the Czech Republic. There are other hotels with friendlier staff. Avoid this place like it’s coronavirus!”

In a statement, the hotel said Wesley Barnes was upset that he had been charged a fee to bring his own bottle of gin to the property’s restaurant. After arguing with the manager about the fee, the man managed to avoid the extra payment and left. Still according to the resource, the customer posted not just one negative but multiple review on TripAdvisor and Google. In June, the man allegedly charged the resource “modern slavery,” a comment that was removed from Tripadvisor for violating the travel website’s guidelines.

In the same statement, the hotel says that “they agree that using defamation law can be seen as excessive in this situation.” However, “the client refused to respond to communication attempts and continued to post negative and defamatory reviews about the company.” Speaking to Fox News, a hotel spokesperson explained that the posts include allegations that the hotel “practices slavery, xenophobic connotations against the director of food and beverage because of his Czech nationality,” as well as leaving comments that “may induce readers to associate the hotel with the coronavirus. “

TripAdvisor released a statement saying that it is investigating the incident and is against anyone being prosecuted for the content of a review. “TripAdvisor opposes the idea that a traveler could be sued for expressing opinions,” the company said in a statement.

Wesley Barnes runs the risk of being sentenced to two years in prison and fined more than 5,000 euros for defamation.
