A six-year-old boy fell on Monday, at 7:00 p.m., from the ninth floor of a building in Tapada das Mercês, in Sintra. In the neighborhood, the atmosphere is one of “shock” and “dismay.”

“We heard a noise that sounded like a bag of cement falling on top of cars. In a building next to mine, a neighbor who was on the porch saw and started asking for help. Everyone was screaming, but no one moved and he ran out of the house. And I didn’t even want to believe what I saw, I’ll never forget it, ”says Anabela Pinto, a neighbor of the building across the street, the first to see the boy on the floor and call the fire department.

The neighbor realized that the child had fallen from a balcony, but from the windows and balconies of the building she did not see anyone. “It was difficult to see where it had fallen from because no one could be seen on the balconies. I called a neighbor in that building and asked her to recognize the child, but she didn’t identify her either. The mother arrived later and

THE The boy was accompanied by his six and nine year old siblings.. At the time of the fall, the mother and her partner, who was not the father of any of the three children, reportedly went away to shop at the Pingo Doce supermarket, a few meters from the house.

When the firefighters arrived, the boy was already in cardiopulmonary arrest. Resuscitation maneuvers were carried out at the scene and during the transport to Hospital Santa María, in Lisbon, but death was finally declared in the hospital, according to the commander of the Algueirão Mem-Martins firefighters, Joaquim Leonardo.

It is not the first time that a child falls from a building in Tapada das Mercês. “A five-year-old boy fell last year. She survived, but was left quadriplegic. It’s a shame, parents have to work and have nowhere to leave their children, it’s the harsh reality. Pingo Doce is right next door, in A. Sometimes I also leave my son at home, but she is 11. Now I want to go home, worried about this, ”confesses Felicidade Pires, a resident of Tapada das Mercês.

Ana Isabel, an employee of the Pé de Lima grocery store, adjacent to the building, knew Eugenia, her mother and her children, who regularly came to her establishment. “I find it hard to believe what happened, it seemed like a normal family and they were always happy. I don’t think it was due to negligence. What I find most strange is that the boy fell and the 9-year-old

The Lisbon PSP Metropolitan Command confirmed to JN that the three children were alone at home and that the mother would have been absent, without confirming where. The sisters of the deceased child, aged nine and six, were identified this Monday by the Commission for the Protection of Children and Youth (CPCJ), he added.
