Higher education institutions have more than six thousand places for students who want to compete in the second phase of the National Access Competition, but there are four institutions that no longer have a vacancy.
These are some of the data released by the General Directorate of Higher Education (DGES), the day the results of the 1st phase of the National Competition for Access to Higher Education are known.
In this 1st phase, more than 62 thousand students competed and almost 51 thousand already have a guaranteed place in a higher education institution.
The second phase of the contest begins on Monday and the institutions have at least 6050 places for students, that is, half of the students who were left out of the 1st phase.
But not all institutions have vacancies: the ISCTE – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, for example, repeats the situation of last year, having filled the 1,338 places it has made available.
There were also no vacancies in the Coimbra, Lisbon and Porto Nursing Schools, according to DGES data.
The Universidade Nova de Lisboa is also emerging as one of the most requested schools, having only one of the almost three thousand places that it made available for this phase. Last year, Nova appeared alongside ISCTE as the two institutions whose student demand filled all vacancies.
There are more vacancies in the Interior
Conversely, the institution with the fewest vacancies filled in this 1st phase is the Instituto Politécnico de Bragança: Of the 2,160 places available, 1,029 were filled, that is, approximately half.
Also on this list are the Instituto Politécnico da Guarda, which has 512 remaining places, the Politécnico de Viseu with 484 places, the Castelo Branco which has 400 and the Viana do Castelo with 375 places.
This year many more students competed in the 1st phase (an increase of 15% compared to last year) and close to 12,000 failed to obtain the placement.
Of the 56,121 vacancies available, 6,050 vacancies remained for the 2nd phase of the competition, which represents a decrease of 10% compared to the same phase of the 2019 competition.
Last year, in the 2nd phase there were 6,734 places and, in 2015, the number was even higher, with 8,714 places available for the students who competed in the 2nd phase.
Despite these figures, institutions can increase the number of vacancies by transferring fixed and vacant vacancies in special competitions for access and admission to higher education, in case new vacancies are filled in special competitions in higher education institutions through early October, highlights the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education.
Between Monday, September 28 and October 9, applications for the 2nd phase of the national competition for access to the 2020/2021 academic year will be submitted.
The results of the first phase of the contest are available on the Internet from 00:01 today on the website of the Directorate General for Higher Education (http://www.dges.gov.pt), which can also be consulted at through the app. ES Access, available on iOS and Android platforms.
