Millennium bcp could be available for a merger with Banco Montepio if an intervention is necessary, reports the edition of “Expresso”, this Saturday, September 26.

The publication indicated that the BCP demonstrated this availability in a meeting with the Minister of Finance, João Leão, who met with bankers for bank default, in which the issue of Banco Montepio, which has already drawn up a transformation plan, always ended. arise.

The weekly said it confirmed this information “from various sources.” BCP did not comment on the possible merger, while the finance ministry denied that the meetings were held to address the Montepio issue.

The same edition of the newspaper also reports, in other news, that a source from the Executive said that it will not interfere if the merger corresponds to the will of the two credit institutions.

This Friday, Jornal Economico had access to an internal communication sent to the employees of Banco Montepio and signed jointly by the president, Carlos Tavares, and the general director, Pedro Leitão.

This communication presented, in general terms, aspects of the transformation plan that will be implemented at Banco Montepio with the aim of making it “efficient” and “profitable”. Between 600 and 900 people are expected to leave due to early retirement and termination by mutual agreement, in addition to the closure of 37 branches that are considered “geographically redundant,” with the closure of another four dozen still in the equation.
