The suspect of driving the car shot by the PSP during a robbery in São João da Madeira, this morning, is one of the 1874 prisoners released by covid-19.

A drug addict, with a history of property crimes, namely theft inside vehicles, the man was driving the vehicle that tried to run over the policemen who interrogated him, early in the morning of this Wednesday, during an attempted robbery in São João da Madera.

According to JN, the man directed the car towards one of the policemen, who managed to dodge him, then tried to hit the other in reverse. One of the policemen fired more than one shot, according to a witness, after hitting a 23-year-old woman living in Porto.

The woman would eventually die in the São João da Madeira hospital, where she was left by the suspect, who went to the emergency room for help and then left the scene. The victim was shot in the torso.

The suspect of being involved in the aggression is one of the prisoners released within the framework of the reduction of the prison population, adopted during the pandemic, and which allowed the release of 1,874 prisoners, with sentences of less than two years in prison.

Since his release, the PSP has seen a sharp increase in robberies inside cars in São João da Madeira, and this former inmate was referred to the practice of this type of crime.

Due to the existence of several vehicle thefts in a specific place in the city of São João da Madeira, “the PSP created a team dedicated to this criminal phenomenon,” the PSP said in the statement in which it reported the death of the young man during an operation, since midnight on Wednesday, on Avenida do Vale, in São João da Madeira.

“The Police on duty detected a suspicious vehicle circulating in the area where the robberies occurred, with the lights off, stopping by parked vehicles,” said the PSP. After hearing “the noise corresponding to the breaking of a glass” of a car, the police approached the occupants of the suspect vehicle.

“During the approach to the suspects, the police fired with a firearm, in circumstances that will be investigated,” said the PSP, highlighting that “the suspicious vehicle managed to escape from the place, without being able to arrest its occupants.”

“Subsequently, a citizen with a gunshot wound was admitted to the São João da Madeira Hospital, who is supposed to be related to the incident described,” said the PSP. “The citizen, about 23 years old, went into cardiopulmonary arrest and died in the hospital,” can also be read in the document.
