A woman died this Thursday in São João da Madeira, in the Aveiro district, due to injuries caused by a gunshot that could have been fired by an agent of the Public Security Police (PSP). It is the PSP itself that denounces the incident in a statement sent to the newsrooms.

According to that note, a team of agents was investigating the “existence of several thefts in vehicles in a specific place in the city” and around midnight, in the area of Avenida do Vale, they found “a suspicious vehicle circulating in the area of occurrence of the robbery, with the lights off, stopping next to the parked vehicles ”. Official reports indicate that at a certain moment “the noise corresponding to the breaking of the glass of a vehicle” parked in this area was heard and, as such, “the police approached the occupants [da viatura suspeita]”. It was as a result of this collision that the shots arose “in circumstances that will be investigated”, this before the suspects fled the scene in the vehicle.

Later, a 23-year-old woman was admitted to the São João da Madeira Hospital with injuries caused by a firearm, “which is supposed to be related to the incident described.” A short time later, she suffered a respiratory arrest and that was the cause of her death. The PSP has already announced that both the Judicial Police and the General Inspectorate of Internal Administration (IGAI) are investigating the case, with two inspectors from the PSP Inspectorate already conducting an initial analysis and evaluation. The same police have also launched a disciplinary investigation to investigate the circumstances surrounding the police intervention.
