Is there a connection between train travel and virus transmission?

HE The study, to which the Lusa agency had access, was developed by researchers Milton Severo, Ana Isabel Ribeiro, Raquel Lucas, Teresa Leão and Henrique Barros from the Institute of Public Health of the University of Porto (ISPUP), between 2 March and 05 of July.

The analysis focused on the parishes crossed by the railways of Azambuja, Sintra, Cascais, do Sul (Fertagus), Sado and Oeste, located in municipalities of Zone Metropolitan of Lisbon.

Speaking to the Lusa agency, Professor Milton Severo, one of the authors of the study, explained that the objective was to understand the relationship between the proximity of railway stations to the transmission of COVID-19-19.

“It was found that, when comparing these lines, they were not homogeneously associated. That is, the risk of infection it was not higher in the parishes closest to the stations than in the farthest ones ”, he pointed out.

The researcher said that, for example, the Sintra line presented a higher risk in the parishes crossed by the train, but that in the Sado and Fertagus the risk turned out to be higher in non-crossed parishes.

However, since April, researchers were realizing that factor most decisive for the risk of contagion were the conditions socioeconomic.

“While at the beginning of pandemic this indicator (deprivation socioeconomic) was not associated, with the passage of time this indicator became associated and the parishes with greater deprivation present greater risk infection compared to the others, “he said.

Thus, as the main conclusions, the study shows that there is no link direct between rail transport and the risk of infection, since the data has been changing over time, and puts as factor determining conditions socioeconomic.

A pandemic of COVID-19-19 has already caused at least 961,531 deaths and more than 31.1 million cases of infection in 196 countries and territories, according to a report prepared by the French agency AFP.

In Portugal, 1,920 people died from 69,200 cases of infection confirmed, according to the most recent Address-General health.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected not end of December, in Wuhan, a city in central China.

After Europe succeeded China as the center of pandemic in February, the American continent is now the one with the most confirmed cases and the most deaths.
