Graça Freitas revealed this Monday that, with regard to the obligation to wear masks in public spaces, this situation could occur when the Portuguese are in crowded places. The general director of health was asked at the DGS press conference about the insistence of the Order of Physicians on the mandatory use of a mask in public spaces.

“The guidance will come out that when people abroad cannot guarantee the recommended physical distance for themselves or others, they can and should wear a mask. If they are abroad, but distant from other people, we will not make this recommendation, but people are free to use it at all times. The recommendation will be that outdoor use can occur when we are in crowded places ”, explained Graça Freitas.

The general director of health emphasizes that DGS has always had an evolutionary position depending on the risk assessment. “We have already recommended the use of outdoor masks. In the open air it will make sense to wear masks where we cannot guarantee that we are far from others ”.

On the other hand, Graça Freitas, considers that it is different to be outdoors in a field or garden, at times when people are not walking and as such the use of masks will be based on the proximity of people: “if we are It is not far enough away. I need to use the barrier method, if we are close that method helps ”.

Asked about the evolution of the pandemic in the elderly, Graça Freitas highlighted that “at the beginning of the pandemic we had more cases of the elderly, with a higher percentage of hospitalization and fatality. This trend has changed, today only 11% of those infected in the last 24 hours are over 70 years old ”.
