The General Directorate of Health will recommend, very soon, the use of an outdoor mask in situations in which it is not possible to maintain social distance.
“Very soon, there will be an orientation for people abroad to wear a mask if they cannot keep their distance from others,” Health Director General Graça Freitas said at a press conference on Monday.
After consulting with international experts, DGS concludes that “the use of masks outdoors can occur when we are very close to other people, in crowded places, where we have to stay.”
Asked about the start of the school year, Graça Freitas considered that “the first week went quite well” and admitted that “there are still adjustments to be made”.
“Nim” to the offer of 500 thousand rapid tests from the Red Cross
The Secretary General of Health, António Lacerda Sales, admitted that the Government will accept the 500,000 rapid tests for covid-19 offered by the Portuguese Red Cross, revealing that between today and tomorrow there will be meetings that will be decisive.
“In a context of scarce resources, epidemiological evolution and in specific situations, outbreaks in homes or schools, these antigen tests could be an advantage, since they allow the detection of individuals with active disease,” said António Lacerda Sales.
In the usual press conference on Monday, which brings together the Ministry of Health and the General Directorate of Health, in Lisbon, the governor clarified that this type of test “has a lower sensitivity than PCR tests, and can give rise to tests false “. negative, especially in asymptomatic patients with low viral load “, reason why the decision of the Government is taking time.
With the arrival of autumn, several countries are doing these tests, with some conditions, and Portugal is monitoring and evaluating. “There is still some uncertainty and uncertainty for its current use, without prejudice to its use, due to the evolution of the epidemiological outbreak,” added Lacerda Sales, announcing that this Monday “a meeting will be held between DGS, INSA and Infarmed, to define the strategy for these tests. ”Tomorrow they bring together Infarmados, INSA and the Red Cross.
