In a statement, the party released the results of the internal consultation that took place on September 18 and 19, “in which the former MEP obtained an overwhelming majority of votes (88.9%)”, corresponding to 255 votes.

In second place, with 9.88% (25 votes) was the candidate supported by the Left Bloc, Marisa Matias, in an election that also had 3 votes for the “remaining candidates”, 16 white and 11 null.

Members and supporters were also clear when asked whether Livre should support a candidate for the presidential election, with 91% voting “yes” and only 9% choosing “no.”

“Ana Gomes has shown that she will be a free, dialogue and firm president. This is a fundamental position on the eve of Portugal assuming the Presidency of the Council of the European Union and benefiting from an Economic Recovery Package, ”Livre argued in a statement.

For the poppy party, Ana Gomes will be “decisive in the fight against corruption and tax evasion”, characterizing her as a President “knowledgeable, respectful and vigilant of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic” who “will respond to the emergence of authoritarian threats and will safeguard especially human rights ”.

Last Wednesday, the Contact Group (Leadership) of the party had already recommended to its members and supporters the election of Ana Gomes as a candidate to support the Belém race, considering that “the political area of ​​the left must be strengthened in these elections.” .

Six months after the end of the term of the current president of the Republic, there are already eight candidates for the position of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

They are the deputy André Ventura (Chega), lawyer and founder of the Liberal Initiative Tiago Mayan Gonçalves, the leader of the Republican Democratic Party (PDR), Bruno Fialho, the MEP and leader of BE Marisa Matias, former deputy of the European Parliament and the director from the PS, Ana Gomes, Vitorino Silva (better known as Tino de Rans), the former CDS activist Orlando Cruz and currently João Ferreira, from the PCP.
