More than thirty years later, Judge Rui Rangel and Judge Fátima Galante are still lovingly referred to as “mommy” and “daddy.” On paper they have been married since 1985, they were still magistrates with two years of profession, but in reality the two have been separated for a long time, although united by the inheritance and the supposed businesses that Operation Lex came to expose. After Galante, with whom he had a son, Rangel had two other daughters by two other women. All three are now charged in the process., suspected of having compacted with a schematic which was to hide all the parallel gains of Rangel, the result of other works that he carried out, thus violating the Statute of Judges. Not only.

According to the prosecutor’s order to which the Observer had access, Fátima Galante and Bruna Amaral, the woman with whom Rangel had his third child, will also have helped the judge write sentences attributed to him at the Lisbon Court of Appeal. Galante did it for at least ten years, while Bruna for two, get money directly or indirectly. Both are accused of abuse of power and tax fraud. Galante also adds the charge of passive corruption crime.

The Public Ministry (MP) considers that both adhered to a “plan previously designed by Rui Rangel” to obtain benefits, to which “they knew they had no rights” and thus guarantee that the the judge had more time to develop other associations, integrate programs in the media, elaborate opinions and even run for president of Benfica. These activities brought him additional income.

Between 2012 and 2017, these associations, in the accounts of the Public Ministry, reported a total of 466,450.00 euros, which entered the accounts of Rui Rangel, Maria de Fátima Galante and her son João Rangel, Rita Figueira and her father Albertino . Figueira and Bruna Amaral.

Rui Rangel and Fátima Galante delivered hundreds of half judgments. Processes may be at risk

From the relationship with the judge – who also worked in the Lisbon Court of Appeals, but in the sixth section (Rangel was in the ninth) – a son was born, João, who according to the Public Ministry prosecutor’s office was often the reason for concern in Galante’s stories. Although the young man works, there are several messages and emails from the magistrate to the lawyer Santos Martins asking for money to pay for his son’s expenses or to help him on the trips he made, for example.

It was with Galante that Rangel divided the assets, among which were the real estate investment companies that, supposedly, they maintained in parallel with the Judicial Power, although on behalf of third parties. And the complicity between them is visible in their communications. Galante also does not miss the opportunity to criticize his girlfriends, as well as the expenses that Rangel pays them. He even calls Bruna Amaral “garimpeira 2”, “brega” and “social climber”, confirming that part of the allegedly illicit money that the judge received was also distributed to the other two defendants.
