In a statement, the Loures Carnival Association explains that the measures are taking into account the evolution of the coronavirus (Covid-19) in Portugal and calls for a “better understanding” of the “disorders eventually caused, underlining that this decision has the purpose “. the only way to avoid risks to public health and guarantee, above all, the well-being and safety of all ”.

The association says that the measures will be subject to permanent monitoring and evaluation, being reviewed and modified in accordance with the guidelines that the General Directorate of Health (DGS) may issue.

This decision to cancel the fado night scheduled for November 7 and all carnival celebrations scheduled for February 12 to 17, 2021 was made at a meeting held on September 15.

On September 9, the Network of Carnival Cities of the Central Region had also announced that the carnival corsets of Estarreja, Ovar, Mealhada, Figueira da Foz and Torres Vedras will not be held next year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. 19. .

The municipalities that make up the network concluded, after a meeting held in Ovar, in the Aveiro district, that “according to the data currently available, there are no conditions to celebrate Carnival 2021 in the usual way, that is, the carnival corsairs” .

The decision is aimed at avoiding meetings of people and promoting social distance.

However, the organizations of these five carnivals stated that they intended to carry out initiatives on the occasion of the event, pending instructions from the DGS, which requested a meeting.

The Network of Carnival Cities of the Central Region will insist on the meeting with the DGS, “so that the carnivals can organize and plan possible initiatives on the occasion of the carnival season of 2021”.
