The General Directorate of Health (DGS) reports in this Saturday’s bulletin the existence of a total of 1,899 deaths and 68,025 cases of covid-19 in Portugal since the start of the pandemic.

The number of new infected by the new coronavirus is today 849, the fifth worst day in terms of the daily increase in infection cases since the start of the pandemic. There are still 493 more active patients than yesterday, out of a total of 20,722.

1,899 deaths from covid-19 are confirmed, five more than in the last epidemiological bulletin yesterday. Four of these deaths were recorded in the north and one in Lisbon and the Tagus valley. Of the total deaths, 1,266 are over 80 years old.

Until now, 45,404 people recovered from the disease, 351 in the last 24 hours. So far, 68,025 people have been infected by covid-19, 849 more than in relation to Friday, a figure similar to that reached in early April, a month after the pandemic entered the country.

Lisbon and the Tagus Valley, the region with the most new cases

Of the 849 new cases, 439 occurred in the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region, 288 in the north, 66 in the center, 35 in the Algarve and 16 in the Alentejo.

According to the bulletin, there are 32 more hospitalized patients today and seven more in intensive care. There are 39,388 people under surveillance, 667 more than on Friday.

In total, 68,025 people have already been infected in Portugal, of which 20,722 are active and 45,404 have recovered.

Two infected, 37,290 are women and 30,725 are men and they are mainly between 20 and 60 years old.

Portugal could reach 1,000 cases of infection per day next week

Portugal could reach 1,000 new daily cases of covid-19 next week. The words of the Prime Minister, who nevertheless reminds that the country cannot stop again.

António Costa and Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa insist that the fight against the pandemic is in the hands of the Portuguese.

THE APPEALS OF ANTÓNIO COSTA

António Costa called for this Friday an emergency meeting of the crisis office to monitor the evolution of Covid-19 in Portugal.

In the end, the prime minister left several appeals to the Portuguese and also a warning: “We are experiencing a strong daily growth of new cases, if this trend continues, next week we will reach 1,000 new cases per day.”

The Prime Minister defends that “control of the pandemic depends on the personal responsibility of each one” and reiterates that at this stage the country cannot stop again.

“We must be able to stop the growth of the pandemic … We cannot stop the country like in March,” said the prime minister.

At the end of the meeting, António Costa recalled “five fundamental rules” to follow in order not to return “deprive students of access to school”, restrict “home visits” and “separate families as in Easter”when christmas comes.
