A group of tourists will take home the plastic waste and packaging they left behind during a recent visit to Khao Yai National Park in eastern Thailand. The action is a message for everyone, says the country’s government.
“I want this action to serve as a strong and clear message to all visitors to the park, Thais and foreigners, that we will not tolerate this type of selfish and reckless behavior,” the EFE news agency said on Friday. Thai Environment Minister Warawut Silpa-Archa.
Warawut posted a series of photos on Facebook on Tuesday showing plastic bottles, cans, glass containers and bags of snacks piled up in Khao Yai National Park, about 125 kilometers northeast of Bangkok. Once the authorities knew the addresses and names of the visitors, who were obliged to provide personal data in order to stay overnight, the waste was sent to the visitors.
“Not only will the garbage be returned to the visitor, but the fact has been notified to the police and a fine will be imposed in accordance with the law,” the minister added to Efe, warning that throwing garbage in a natural park is a crime and that the most aggravating consequences entail. Sentences of up to five years in prison and fines of up to 500,000 bats (13,400 euros), according to local law.
Authorities in Thailand, one of the countries with the highest rate of plastic waste, have plans to phase out the use of plastic and polystyrene bags and containers, waste that often ends up in the sea or in natural areas and causes the death of animals. .
