The mayors of three parishes of Viana do Castelo that will be served by the new accesses to the seaport today repudiated the embargo of the work by neighbors who contest the cutting of 20 trees foreseen in the project.

“The municipalities of Viana do Castelo whose populations will be served directly by the new accesses to the seaport publicly repudiate the initiative of some residents of the town of Cabedelo, in Darque, to interrupt what is the last phase of construction of this fundamental road to Viana do Castelo ”, say, in a statement, the three presidents of the parishes of São Romão do Neiva, Chafé and Vila Nova de Anha.

It is about the construction of a roundabout to access the city’s seaport, on Avenida do Cabedelo, in the parish of Darque, which should have started on Monday, but was blocked by neighbors who dispute the massacre of some two dozen of the 170 trees (bananas) on that artery.

The inhabitants of that place in the parish of Darque, on the left bank of the Lima river, launched an extrajudicial embargo to stop the works, which have since been suspended.

The mayors of São Romão do Neiva, Manuel Salgueiro (Independent), Chafé, António Lima (Independent) and Vila Nova de Anha, Filipe Silva (PS), “consider that the route, including its final connection with the national highway, now municipalized , was duly approved by the City Council of Viana do Castelo, the Municipal Assembly of Viana do Castelo and the respective Parish Assemblies and debated in their own headquarters ”.

“This work, essential for the development of the region and especially for the mobility of the inhabitants of the southern bank of the Lima River, cannot be held hostage by the will of some residents of the Darque parish, which, by the way, is one of the most benefited by this important work of high public interest ”, they maintain.

The three mayors add that “the time to discuss this issue is over” and consider that “this stop is detrimental to the population, because the project was duly approved and discussed on time.”

“This is the work of all Viennese and not of some, the Parish Councils cannot remain indifferent, demanding that the construction contract for access to the seaport be resumed with the utmost urgency,” they defend.

On Tuesday, councilors PSD and CDU in the municipal executive, with a socialist majority, requested an extraordinary executive meeting to see “clarified” aspects of the project that they said they did not know, in reference to 20 trees.

That same day, the mayor of Viana do Castelo, José Maria Costa, called that session for Friday, at 3:00 p.m., in the old Paços do Concelho, in Praça da República.

In addition to the clarifications on the slaughter of 20 bananas in the Cabedelo shopping center, in the parish of Darque, the agenda includes a first point on the creation of the Serra d’Arga Regional Protected Landscape area.

In the context of the prevention and control of the covid-19 pandemic, the council session is limited to the participation of 10 citizens who must register in advance.

It is about the construction, started in February 2019, of an 8.8-kilometer highway that will connect the commercial port with the junction of highway 28 (A28) in São Romão de Neiva, which will allow the removal of heavy vehicles From the interior of urban roads.

The new entrances, claimed more than four decades ago, will have two 3.5-meter wide lanes.

The work is financed by the Chamber of Viana do Castelo and the Administration of the Ports of Duero, Leixões and Viana do Castelo (APDL).
