Faced with the COVID-19 pandemic, some educational institutions are looking for alternative solutions to continue teaching. Digital solutions have been very supportive, especially in remote classrooms, but there are also solutions to “securely” control physical presence.

The School of Information Management (IMS) of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa has created an application, mandatory to use, for registering attendance and complaints have already reached the D3 Association – Defense of Digital Rights.

COVID-19: Faculty Creates App

The application works like a digital point book

Associação D3 - Defense of Digital Rights began to receive complaints against the request for "mandatory registration for security reasons" from the Faculty of Information Management (IMS) of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. In Renascença, Ricardo Lafuente, who is part of the D3 management, says that the application works like “a digital book of points”.

According to the website where the information was posted ...

It is essential for everyone to download this app so they can register when in a classroom. The objective of this check-in is to register the presence of the students who attend classes in person, in order to manage the risk of contagion.

This registration is mandatory for security reasons.. Thus, so that together we can prevent and minimize contagion, it is important to download the @NOVA IMS App, available on Android and iOS systems.

Faced with such "mandatory", D3 began to receive the first complaints. According to Lafuente de D3, in statements to Renascença, the NOVA IMS application serves to, in the event of an outbreak, "the faculty notifies possible infected based on the presence in certain classes."

Renascença tried to contact NOVA IMS to try to obtain more information about the application and confirm if it was authorized by the National Commission for Data Protection, so far without success.
