About 30 illegal immigrants landed in the Ria Formosa, in the Algarve, CMTV said. The television channel broadcast an image that shows this moment, in front of the island of Deserta, being possible to see a boat with several people. The alert was given by a lifeguard, around 1 pm.

Since then, the necessary efforts have been mobilized to investigate the situation, namely the means of the National Maritime Authority. According to CMTV, the location is near a restaurant on the beach.

However, GNR clarifies that the Coastal Control Unit (UCC), through the Olhão Coastal Control Detachment, together with the Maritime Police, intercepted 28 migrants who were disembarking on the Ilha sand today at 1:30 p.m. da Deserta.

“As a result of a complaint to the emergency line 112, about suspicious movements of a ship, off Ilha da Deserta, a joint action was immediately triggered between the GNR and the Maritime Police,” read a press release.

Of the 28 migrants, 24 are men, three are women (one pregnant) and one child. GNR also reveals that the boat used to transport migrants was seized.

In the last eight months, 69 migrants from North Africa were intercepted to land illegally in the Algarve. One of the most recent cases took place at the end of July, when a group of 21 migrants were intercepted in the sands of Ilha do Farol, at 7:45 p.m., having spent the night in a pavilion in Olhão. According to the Lusa agency, the Algarve has been sought by illegal immigrants as a gateway to Europe, a trend that has been accentuated in recent months.

In December 2019, a group of eight migrants arrived on the Algarve coast and in January of this year 11 Moroccan citizens were detected off the island of Armona, in the municipality of Olhão. On June 15, a boat with 22 men was intercepted as the crew was preparing to disembark at the Vale do Lobo beach in Quarteira. Days before, on June 6, seven migrants had been detected in front of Olhão.

The day after the June 15 landing, in Vale do Lobo, the Minister of Internal Administration declared in a parliamentary commission that Portugal “should not be ridiculous” when considering that there is an illegal immigration network to the Algarve.
