Iran announced on Saturday that it had executed a young Iranian fighter, Navid Afkari, who was sentenced to death for the murder of a state security officer during “riots” in 2018, according to the state television website.
The sentence was carried out in Shiraz prison, despite calls from the humanitarian organization Human Rights Watch, the International Olympic Committee and FIFA, among others, not to execute the athlete.
The Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported that Section 1 of the Shiraz Revolutionary Court also sentenced Navid Afkari to death on charges of “enmity against God” and two years in prison for insulting the Iranian Supreme Leader.
