Family reunions are the source of the most recent cases of Covid-19 in the Algarve

The recent cases of Covid-19 in the Algarve are mainly the result of “family gatherings”, revealed today the regional health delegate.

The new cases that were registered in July and August were the result of “family reunions, most of the time, families that were reunited, with immigrants, with people from other regions, coming from three or four different places, where there would be one of they are infected and infected relatives ”,“ as happened in the North, ”explained Ana Cristina Guerreiro.

In fact, he stressed, “parties, weddings, baptisms”, “some are cooler than others”, were also the origin of some cases.

But there were still infections “in the workplace, in a restaurant or another”, some of them forced to close for some time.

The regional delegate added that, despite being one of the main concerns of the authorities before the beginning of the bathing season, there was no increase in cases due to the transmission of the virus on the beaches.

“As for the beaches, a situation that we were very afraid of at first, things even turned out well. Of the cases [registados no Algarve durante o Verão]We have no idea that they came from contacts on the beach, ”he said.

At the biweekly press conference of the District Civil Protection Commission in Loulé, Paulo Morgado, president of the Regional Health Administration (ARS) even stressed that the RT, which indicates the degree of transmissibility in the community, is 1, 07 in the Algarve. , among the lowest on the continent. This RT means that, in the region, each infected person infects an average of 1.07 more.

“Some would hope that the RT would have gone up a lot and that, thanks to tourism, we would have a very significant increase in transferability here in the region. That did not happen “, guaranteed the person in charge.

“Despite all the national and foreign tourists, which we had and continue to have, despite the fact that we are already in a phase that is growing at the European level and also at the national level, in the Algarve the situation is relatively contained and with a RT which, although above 1, reassures us about what the tourist year was ».

Secretary of State José Apolinário, regional coordinator of the response to the pandemic, added that “it was possible to have a safe summer in the Algarve.”

“Thank you, in all letters, to the national and foreign tourists who chose the Algarve for their holidays,” he stressed.

So, shouldn’t the Algarve have an exception regime in relation to the Contingency Situation that begins, throughout the country, from 00:00 tomorrow, the 15th?

Paulo Morgado thinks not: “prudence requires that the contingency situation be applied at the national level, without exception in relation to the Algarve.”

Precisely because the pandemic is expected to worsen in autumn and winter, ARS Algarve is preparing a reinforcement of the teams, with the hiring of doctors, nurses, diagnostic technicians and technical and operational assistants.

Paulo Morgado highlighted the “effort” to “train the NHS to respond” to the pandemic situation, revealing that ARS Algarve “has already hired 189 professionals: 49 nurses, 18 senior diagnostic and therapy technicians, 42 technical assistants, 77 operational assistants and 3 senior technicians ».

The Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve (CHUA), for its part, “hired 6 doctors, 47 nurses, 5 senior diagnostic and therapeutic technicians, 16 technical assistants, 54 operative assistants and 4 senior technicians.”

But more professionals will be able to strengthen the SNS, since the president of ARS Algarve announced that “9 doctors will still be hired, who will support the public health units, 1 pharmacy technician, 9 psychologists and 7 senior diagnostic and therapeutic technicians , 29 technical assistants and 13 senior diagnostic and therapeutic technicians ». These tenders are expected to open “soon.”

“There is an effort on the part of the institutions, be it ARS Algarve, as responsible for primary health care, or CHUA, to strengthen their capacity in terms of professionals.”

To this reinforcement linked to Covid, are added the periodic bids for the hiring of specialist doctors, which are open. ARS Algarve has “35 places for its health, general and family medicine centers”, while CHUA has “42 places open for doctors of many specialties”.
