A man accused of shooting another man in Viana do Castelo in 2013, who was arrested in July in France, will begin his trial in October, the lawyer for the victim’s family said today.

Speaking to Lusa, attorney Francisco Morais da Fonte said that the trial is scheduled to begin on October 21, at 2:00 p.m., in the Viana do Castelo court, with a second session scheduled for July 23 , at 9:30.

The man, who is in preventive prison after seven years on the run, is accused of a felony of qualified homicide, a crime against qualified physical integrity and a crime of possession of a prohibited weapon.

The coercion measure was applied to the 36-year-old man in August, after appearing before a judge in the Viana do Castelo court.

At that time, in a statement, the Judicial Police said that “the events date back to January 15, 2013, in Viana do Castelo, and they murdered two brothers.”

Accused of murder in Viana do Castelo arrested in France after 7 years on the run

“The first was struck by sharp blows and the second was fatally shot with a shotgun when, accompanied by other relatives, they were looking for the suspect at his residence. As a result of the events, and even that night, the suspect fled, absent by the foreigner to whom relatives had emigrated, ”the note specifies.

The alleged murderer, Valdemar Silva, known as ‘Nonó’, was arrested on July 16 in Longlaville, Nancy, France, and the next day he appeared before a judge of the Nancy Court of Appeal, who ordered his extradition to Portugal.

The PJ indicated that, “during the seven years that the events and the arrest mediated, there was an intense exchange of information between the Judicial Police and the European counterparts, pointing to the location of the suspect, who ended up being located by the French police.”

The defendant “identified himself by the name of a family member, trying to evade police control”, but “by sharing international information, the real identity was quickly confirmed.”

At the time of the arrest, the lawyer for the victim’s family told Lusa that, “although he was never located, the man was formally charged with the crimes of qualified homicide and a crime of qualified physical integrity.”

The mortal victim, Jorge Matos, 35, known by the nickname ‘Cuba’, was shot dead while his brother was seriously injured after a stabbing.

In 2013, a source from the PSP explained that the two cases took place in different parts of the city center, between 11:10 p.m. and 11:25 p.m., suspecting that it was the same perpetrator.

The two brothers were transferred to the Viana do Castelo hospital, but the eldest died.
