The Israeli government on Sunday approved a three-week total lockdown starting Sept. 18 to halt the second wave of the coronavirus, which reached one of the highest death rates in the world last week.

Israelis will not be able to go out more than 500 meters from home, non-essential shops will remain closed and they will not be able to join more than ten people, among other restrictions in the context of confinement.

The country’s health authorities had warned that there would be a new confinement if they exceeded 2,000 positive daily cases, which did not happen, but, in the last week, they have already risen to 4,000, with hospitals in a state of saturation and increasing serious cases . Yes.

The closure will last until October 9 and will coincide with three very important religious celebrations for the Jews: Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year), Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) and Sukkot (Tabernacles).

During this period, residents will not be able to go further than 500 meters from the residence except for individual sports activities, and schools, hotels and shopping centers will close.

There will be a limit of ten people in meetings in closed spaces and 20 outdoors, supermarkets and pharmacies will be able to operate, but the rest of the trade will only be for home deliveries.

The public sector will minimize its workers and the private sector will be able to continue working normally, but will not be allowed to receive clients.

“These measures are very costly for all of us,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said after announcing the lockdown and the imposed rules.

“But only if we comply with the rules, and I trust that we will, we will defeat the virus,” he added, before boarding the plane that will take him to Washington, in the United States, to sign, on September 15, at the White House. , diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

The decision to apply a new confinement was made after a meeting of government ministers, which lasted more than seven hours and which, according to local media, provoked shouts and cross accusations, was also marked by the resignation of the Minister of Construction and Housing, the ultra-orthodox Yaakov Litzman, as well as several ministers who warned of the damage that the closure will cause in the economy.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed at least 921,097 deaths and more than 28.8 million cases of infection in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

In Portugal, 1,867 people died out of 63,983 confirmed cases of infection, according to the most recent bulletin from the Directorate General of Health.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.

After Europe succeeded China as the center of the pandemic in February, the American continent is now the one with the most confirmed cases and the most deaths.
