President Donald Trump announced another Middle East peace agreement, this time between Israel and Bahrain. The two states agreed to restore normal diplomatic relations, as can be seen in a joint statement between the three countries involved.

“This is a historic agreement to deepen peace in the Middle East,” the statement read. The compromise comes after talks between Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, and King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, whom the parties involved thank for receiving the “Peace for Prosperity” conference on June 25, 2019 .

The statement also recalls the role of the United Arab Emirates and its leader, Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, for the leadership shown in taking the first step between the Arab countries of the region and moving towards normalization of relations with Israel.

President Trump has called the agreement “historic.” “It is unimaginable that this could happen so quickly,” the US president congratulated reporters at the White House. Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and an adviser to the Trump administration for the region, also believes in a “new beginning for the Middle East,” praising the alliances forged by the United States and its president.

On the other hand, several Palestinian leaders and voices have already condemned the agreement, speaking of a “stab in the back” from the cause of the Palestinian people. A source close to Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority, reportedly told Al Jazeera that “peace in the Middle East will not come without a solution to the Palestinian problem.”
