A 19-year-old girl infected with covid-19 was raped by the ambulance driver transporting her to hospital on Saturday night in India.
According to the newspaper “The Indian Express”, the rape occurred in the district of Pathanamthitta, in the southern part of the Indian state of Kerala, last Saturday night. The ambulance driver first picked up the young woman and then another patient who was also infected with the new coronavirus. When the second woman got out of the vehicle upon reaching the medical center, the young woman and the driver were alone.
According to the authorities, it was at that moment that the driver took the ambulance to a deserted place where there were no people and raped the young woman. When he left her at the hospital, the man asked her forgiveness and told her not to tell anyone.
However, the victim informed the doctors when he arrived at the hospital and it was the doctors themselves who reported what happened to the authorities. The woman also had recordings of part of what happened.
Authorities reported that the attacker, who they identified as Noufal, is charged with attempted murder in 2019. The GVK Institute for Research and Emergency Management also released a statement announcing the man’s resignation.
The event caused much indignation in the country, with several feminist activism platforms asking the Police to prepare a report with the measures taken.
Kerala Women’s Commission Chairperson MC Josephine also spoke out, saying that people with criminal records should not have access to positions related to fighting coronavirus.
