At the end of the first half, Meo overtook Nos and gained the leadership of the pay TV market in Portugal. According to data released this Tuesday by Anacom, the operator Altice now has a 39.8% stake, slightly above the 39.7% reached by the operator led by Miguel Almeida. They are followed by Vodafone (16.7%) and Nowo (3.7%).

The objective of dethroning the Nos in this segment, the only one in which Meo was not leading, had been advanced in August last year by the CEO of Altice Portugal. At the time, Alexandre Fonseca said that Meo was getting closer and closer to the historical leader of the television segment, and that he intended to reach that place “absolutely by the end of the year.” A goal that was not achieved within that calendar, but was achieved six months later.

The regulator also details that Vodafone and Meo were the operators that, in net terms, had the highest number of subscribers in relation to the same period last year “, with their shares increasing by 0.9 percentage points and 0.3 percentage points, On the contrary, the participation of NOS (-0.9 pp) and NOWO (-0.3 pp) decreased.

In the first half of 2020, around 89.3% of households had subscribed to a pay TV service, 3.3 percentage points more than in the same period last year.

In total, the number of subscribers to this service reached 4.15 million, 165 thousand more (+ 4.1%) than in the same period last year. “This is the highest annual growth in absolute and relative terms seen since 2016”, underlines Anacom.

This growth was driven by the offers supported by fiber optics, which registered 263 thousand additional subscribers compared to the same period of the previous year (+ 14.8%), exceeding two million accesses.
