Court of Appeal sentences Rosa Grilo’s lover to 25 years in prison

Rosa Grilo, on the other hand, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder of her husband and the payment of compensation of 42 thousand euros to her youngest son.
However, the Public Ministry (MP) announced the same day that it would appeal the acquittal of António Joaquim.

During the sentence reading session, the MP’s lawyer, Raúl Farias, expressed to the jury the need to make a correction, arguing that the MP’s prosecutor’s office pointed to evidence about the involvement of António Joaquim in the murder of Luís Grilo.

In the accusation, the MP attributed to António Joaquim the responsibility of the shooting, in the presence of Rosa Grilo, when the triathlete was sleeping.

However, during the trial, the jury made a non-substantial change in the facts, attributing the shooting to the defendant.

Since September 2018, Rosa Grilo has been detained awaiting trial. António Joaquim, who was subjected to the same measure of coercion, was released on December 6, 2019, after the panel of judges accepted a request submitted by the defense requesting the revocation of the most severe measure of coercion.

In the final arguments of the trial, on November 26, 2019, the public prosecutor of the MP Raúl Farías defended before the accused sentences of 20 and a half years in prison, arguing that both planned, outlined and executed a plan with a view to killing the victim.

The widow Rosa’s lover also said that he had never discussed the case with the now convicted woman since the day the Luís Grilo murder trial began.
