A firefighter died this Monday from smoke inhalation during the fire fighting in Antelas, Oliveira de Frades.

It’s about Pedro Daniel Ferreira, 38-year-old firefighter for the Oliveira de Frades corporation, disappeared since early afternoon.

On the ground, there are more than 200 operations supported by 10 air and 78 ground means.

The fire broke out in the middle of the morning in a mountainous and “quite steep” area, according to SIC reporter Frederico Correia.

Interior Minister regrets death of firefighter

The Minister of Interior Administration regretted the death of Pedro Daniel Ferreira on Monday.

Through a statement, Eduardo Cabrita left a message of support for the firefighter’s family and the Oliveira de Frades corporation.

“At this time of consternation for all Portuguese, I remember, with great gratitude, the generous, professional and always selfless way in which, every day, thousands of firefighters are part of this national effort to defend the forest against fires.”

Around a hundred municipalities in 14 districts of mainland Portugal today have a maximum risk of fire, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
