The pilgrimage of S. João d’Arga, in Caminha, was elected this Saturday one of the 7 Wonders of Popular Culture.

Another Alto Minho pilgrimage, S. Bartolomeu, in Ponte da Barca, was also one of the winners of the RTP contest.

S. João de Braga, one of the 14 finalists, was out of the seven most voted by the public.

The remaining winners were Bailinho da Madeira, Criptojudaísmo de Belmonte, district of Castelo Branco, the Festival in Honor of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, in Lamego, district of Viseu, Os Santeiros de São Mamede do Coronado, in Trofa, district of Porto and the Colete Encarnado, in Vila Franca de Xira, Lisbon district.

The final act of the 7 Wonders of Popular Culture contest was broadcast on public television RTP, with 14 competing applications, seven of which were placed in the Festivals and Fairs category, which were chosen by the public through telephone voting.

The contest has seven categories, namely Handicrafts, Legends and Myths, Festivals and Fairs, Music and Dances, Rituals and Customs, Processions and Pilgrimages, and Artifacts.

In addition to the winners, seven other applications had been selected for the final, namely the Art of Silk by Freixo de Espada à Cinta (Freixo de Espada à Cinta, Bragança), Feira de S. Tiago (Covilhã, Castelo Branco) , the Bença do Gado Festival (Riachos, Santarém), the Espiga Festival (Salir, Faro), the São João de Braga Festival (Braga), the Dry Stone Walls (Porto de Mós, Leiria) and Santo António, Lisbon Festivals (Lisbon).
