In the first phase of the National Access Competition, Higher Education will open 56,866 vacancies, one tenth more than in 2019. The increase was achieved with the reduction of places for international students.

The 17 courses of excellence (chosen by students with the highest averages) will have 399 more places. The areas with the highest demand will also be strengthened. In total, and in the first phase of the Contest for Access to Higher Education, 56,866 places will be opened, 4,737 more than those announced in July and 5,298 more than last year.

Even so, the number of candidate students is not enough: this year, 62,675 students applied, the highest number since 1996. Looking at the recent past, the increase in demand this year was “exceptional”, considers the Ministry of Higher Education. .

The increase in admissions to universities and polytechnics will be made at the expense of the reduction of places for international students. The number has been reduced to 6,000, still above the 4,500 registrations made last year by foreign students.

Manuel Heitor, Minister of Science and Higher Education, told JN that only two institutions feel less demand from international students: Algarve and Coimbra. “It depends a lot on the origin of the students, but the other institutions do not” report a significant reduction.

The remaining places go to the second phase

The number of international students who apply will dictate a new increase in places in the national access competition. If demand does not meet expectations, Manuel Heitor admits to reinforcing the vacancies that will open in the second phase of the national competition.

The same can happen with the places that are not occupied by students of the professional or artistic trajectory. In the specific entrance exams for these students, only 1096 passed, less than half of the 2615 places open in the first phase. Registration takes place between the 8th and 15th of this month and Manuel Heitor admits that the rest of the vacancies are taken to the second phase of the access competition.

The year should have 90 thousand registered

In the academic year that begins this month, Portugal should have 90 thousand people enrolled in higher education, including the various forms of entry to the public system, short-term technological courses (CTeSP) and private education.

In the academic year 2019/2020, 84 thousand students attended higher education.
