The bodies of five children were found in the apartment where they lived in the town of Solingen, West Germany, according to local police, who still do not know what caused the deaths.

Police are investigating the fifth murder allegedly committed by the 27-year-old mother, who according to the newspaper image she attempted suicide by throwing herself under a train and is seriously injured.

Police found the bodies of the children, aged between one and eight, in the young woman’s apartment in the city of Solingen, in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, between Düsseldorf and Cologne. There were three girls (18 months, two and three years) and two boys (six and eight years).

It was the children’s grandmother who alerted the police, after speaking on the phone with their mother, who had since gone to the train station in Düsseldorf, 25 kilometers from home. She was accompanied by her other son, eleven years old.

The son left there by train to the place where his grandmother lives, a journey of about half an hour. The mother threw herself on the train track, sustaining serious injuries. It is not clear what happened first.

“We assume there is a crime and we still have to question the mother, but at the moment she is not yet in a position to do so,” said police spokesman Stefan Weiand in Solingen. “We still don’t know what exactly happened, when or why, just that it is a very tragic situation.” The cause of death must be established after autopsies are performed.
