The management of the Belmond Reid Palace informed dozens of workers on Thursday about a collective dismissal process that should take place at the hotel. The information was confirmed to TSF-Madeira by the president of the Union of Hospitality and Related Workers, Adolfo Freitas: “There are around 63 workers, and they are also exempt from attending work throughout the process.”
For next Tuesday, said Adolfo Freitas, a meeting is scheduled between the workers and the union’s legal advisor, Mauro Gonçalves. The union leader does not know if the hotel will close, but believes that it will continue to operate: “The hotel has around 200 workers, we think that if it closed it would cover everyone,” he said.
