Spain recorded 8,959 new cases of Covid-19 today, an increase of almost 400 since Wednesday, which brings the number of people infected to 488,513 since the start of the pandemic, according to figures published by the Spanish Ministry of Health.

The country has 40 more deaths from the disease reported in the last 24 hours, two fewer than on Wednesday, bringing the total number of deaths to 29,234.

Madrid registered 3,077 cases

Madrid continues to be the autonomous community with the highest number of new infections, 3,077 of those registered today, more than a third of the national total.

1,067 people have been admitted to hospitals with the disease since Wednesday, 306 in Madrid, 149 in Andalusia and 106 in Catalonia.

810 people with the new coronavirus have been discharged from the hospital, which means the number of hospitalized patients is increasing, with 7,194 people hospitalized across the country.

The Covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 863,000 deaths worldwide since December last year, including 1,829 in Portugal.

In Europe, the highest number of fatalities is registered in the United Kingdom (41,514 deaths, more than 338 thousand cases), followed by Italy (35,507 deaths, more than 272 thousand cases), France (30,686 deaths, more than 293 thousand cases) and Spain (29,234 deaths, more than 488 thousand cases).
