João Afonso, PSD councilor in the Montijense autarchy, who leads the PS, is going to camp tonight with other elected officials next to the City Council in protest against what he considers the “inertia” of President Nuno Canta to face the evictions of hundreds of families who cannot bear the increase in rents.

João Afonso estimates that some two thousand people, mostly single women with children, are being “evicted from the houses by the owners.” The reason, the real estate speculation in Montijo, catalyzed by the announcement of the construction of the Montijo airport that causes the owners to increase the rents from the current 450 euros to 700. “These families, many single parents made up of women with children, resort to social services autarky, but they face a lack of response, ”says João Afonso.

The PSD councilor criticizes the PS executive for not doing anything about it. “It was proposed to create a social fund to support needy families that would support the added value of the new income, but the PS refused to accept it,” adds João Afonso. The Social Democrat also describes the lack of investment by the PS in the municipality’s social housing stock. In the last decade no investment has been made in social housing or at controlled costs, and nothing is planned for the next few years ”.

The municipality recently acquired the land of the former Isidoro factory, with 1.2 hectares in the center of Montijo for municipal and cultural spaces and also for the construction of some 60 income-controlled homes for the middle class. João Afonso says that “a public construction tender has not yet been launched, so it is not a short-term hypothesis.” It was not possible to get a reaction from the municipality until the time of this publication.
