Dito, former player of Sp. Braga, Benfica and FC Porto dies

Said, current CEO of Gil Vicente, died this Thursday after a massive heart attack. According to the information gathered from the Barcelos emblem, the former Portuguese international was driving to Melgaço, where Gil was training, when he felt bad.

The club’s medical team also assisted the director on the spot and finally Dito was transferred to the Monção Hospital. Unfortunately, nothing could be done to save his life. Apparently, Dito suffered a massive heart attack and left everyone in Gil Vicente, naturally, traumatized.

He said, alias Eduardo José Camassele Méndez, was 58 years old and had a long and rich career in Portuguese football. He started playing football at Gil Vicente, but it was at Sp. Braga where he spent ten years (1976 to 1986) and attracted the attention of the great Portuguese clubs.

In 86 he was signed by Benfica and in Luz he made 81 games and two goals in two years. He was national champion and won the Portuguese Cup in 1987. A year later he moved to FC Porto, together with Rui Águas, but only stayed one season at Estádio das Antas. He played 19 games under the orders of coaches Quinito and Artur Jorge.

In the final stage of his football career he also played in V. Setúbal, Sp. Espinho, Gil Vicente, Torreense and Ovarense. For the Selection he played 17 games between 1981 and 1987 and scored a goal (on February 23, 1983, against Germany).

In 1997 he began his career as a coach at Esposende. Then he went through Salgueiros, Felgueiras, Chaves, Portimonense, Ribeirão, Moreirense, Sp. Braga (juniors), Varzim, Famalicão and Sp. Covilhã. He was in the mountains for the 2018/19 season, before deciding to return to his Gil Vicente to occupy a relevant position in the structure of professional football.
