A black man was shot and killed Monday in Los Angeles by police, who say the victim had a gun that he threw down during an operation in which officers tried to arrest the man. The protests were immediate, in a general climate of tension and distrust towards the forces of order, after several cases of police violence against African Americans.
Since “about thirty years”, the man – identified by the Black Lives Matter Los Angeles movement as Dijon Kizzee – riding a bike Monday afternoon when police officers tried to arrest him for a traffic violationSaid Lt. Brandon Dean of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office at a news conference.
According to the authorities, the man “escaped” leaving his bicycle behind and, when the police managed to arrest him, he attacked one of them in the face. At that moment, he dropped several pieces of clothing he was wearing.
“Officers noticed that along with the pile of clothes was a black semiautomatic pistol,” Dean added.
That was the moment when the officers fired. The man, shot by several bullets, was killed on the spot.
Authorities did not specify whether the man was looking for the weapon when he was shot. Lieutenant Dean said an investigation was opened into the case and did not confirm the number of shots fired. He simply said that it is “inaccurate” that there have been more than 20, as mentioned in the United States.
According to local media, about 100 people gathered at the scene Monday night to demand justice. The protests spread to the sheriff’s office.
The United States has been the scene of a wave of anti-racist protests following the death of George Floyd in May, a black man suffocated by the knees of a white policeman in Minneapolis.
The demonstrations resumed last week after another white policeman fired seven shots at point-blank range at a black man, Jacob Blake. in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
President Donald Trump, who is visiting the small town on Tuesday, does not plan to meet with the family of Jacob Blake, who has become a paraplegic due to this new apparent case of police abuse.
