The Sanctuary of Fátima has an ongoing restructuring plan that provides for the layoff of up to 50 workers due to the steep drop in income caused by the covid-19 epidemic, the space spokeswoman said.

Speaking to Lusa, Carmo Rodeia said that the Sanctuary of Fátima initiated an internal restructuring plan aimed at reducing fixed positions due to the abrupt drop in the number of pilgrims, especially foreigners, due to covid-19.

“The workers were informed of the situation and given the possibility to reflect on their contractual situation on a voluntary basis. It is premature to be talking about concrete figures for the reduction of positions, but at the end of the process we believe that it will not reach fifty“he said, adding that the Sanctuary currently has 308 employees.

Carmo Candeia explained that the pandemic caused numerous limitations in people’s lives and an economic crisis in all sectors and tourism was no exception, especially religious tourism, with a very significant impact on work flow and economic management. and financial of the Sanctuary. .

“Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have seen a very significant decrease in the number of pilgrims at the Sanctuary, especially foreigners. Between March 13 and May 30, the Shrine has not had pilgrims and since we lost faith, resuming the celebrations with the presence of pilgrims, the truth is that we had breaks in June, July and August in organized groups, mainly foreign groups, above 95%“said the spokeswoman.

Carmo Rodeia explained that the plan began just at the beginning of the pandemic when he realized that it would impose restrictions on the reception of pilgrims and with the reduction of activity, that is, at the formative, catechetical and cultural level with the suspension or cancellation of various activities such as the Symposium that usually takes place in June, training meetings and retreats.

For this reason, “responsibly and in the name of the sustainability of the Sanctuary and so that at no time the conditions necessary for the fulfillment of its mission, which is to welcome the pilgrims, are compromised, the Sanctuary decided to implement this restructuring plan to guarantee peace social within the institution ”, he emphasized.

The institution’s spokesperson also praised the “unsurpassed work” of all the collaborators of the Shrine of Fatima.

“It was them [trabalhadores] presented the situation of the Sanctuary that they know well. In fact, the workers have been insurmountable in this pandemic period in collaborating in services that are not even in their work area to meet the needs of the Sanctuary, ”he said.

Carmo Rodeia also said that the institution “ensures that the reduction in jobs will be as small as possible so that it never compromises what is the mission of the Shrine: to welcome the pilgrims who go to Fatima ”.
