The D3 Association – Defense of Digital Rights wants to know what Apple and Google are doing with the data from the Portuguese anti-Covid application and what the application development costs are, and public money was involved.

This is one of the several doubts that this association has, the day the Stayaway Covid application will be officially launched.

“Why doesn’t the code show what Apple and Google are doing with the available data? What have been the government’s efforts to guarantee full transparency on the part of these entities? “D3 asked in a statement released this Tuesday, September 1.

At the same time, the association wants to know how much it costs to create this application. “How much did it cost to develop the application? Is there public funding for its development or not? Where is the source code for the Stayaway server? ”.

The application will be officially presented this Tuesday at the Oporto Higher Institute of Engineering (ISEP), at an event that will be attended by the Prime Minister, António Costa, the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, and the Minister of Health, Marta Temido.

“The severity of the pandemic means that we are not playing with applications. The existing resources must be available for the methods that we know how to work, and not for financing techno-fantastic adventures of an application that will save the situation ”, said Ricardo Lafuente of D3.

“On what is the Government based to affirm that Stayaway is an” effective tool “, when there is no concrete data that demonstrates the effectiveness of these applications?”, Asks again D3 a Portuguese non-profit association, dedicated to the ” defense of fundamental rights in the digital context ”, according to him.

D3 also has doubts about the impact on the day to day of people who receive an alert for having had a risk contact. “If a person is notified, with the application recommending their isolation, is there a justification for missing work, an exam, classes, meetings?”

Finally, D3 asks what “happens if it is concluded that the application did not work, how are the experiences being shown abroad?”

“At times like this, we have to accept that the miracle solutions provided by technology will not come, and rather we must rely on the proven effectiveness of the measures DGS has already taken. We all can and should do our part, but it is not necessary to install an application for this, just follow the guidelines of public health organizations ”, according to Ricardo Lafuente.

In a balance made by Jornal Economico in the first 48 hours in which the application was made available, more than 50 thousand people downloaded Stayaway Covid for free in the Google store. The application is currently the most popular in the Portuguese application store Google Play.

The anti-Covid app is also included in the Apple Store. In the Portuguese Apple store, the application is the first among medical applications and also leads the ranking of free application downloads.

More than 50,000 people have downloaded the anti-Covid application in 48 hours
