The 2020 edition of the Flower Festival takes place, exceptionally, from September 3 to 27, with a new costume, integrating the Wine Festival. This edition is called the ‘Madeira Flower and Wine Festival’, it has a budget of 790 thousand euros and around 2,100 people participate in its organization.

At the conference to present the event’s program, which took place this morning, in the gardens of the Quinta das Cruzes Museum, the regional secretary for Tourism and Culture also revealed that this edition – marked by the covid-19 and that it will obey a Contingency Plan prepared with the regional health authorities, will have a public capacity of 8,850 places distributed in the different moments of action.

This is a different edition adapted to the current times, but possible to obtain ”.

With the theme ‘Madeira, Flower Universe’, the Flower and Wine Festival will include more than 50 performances by 9 groups (Animad, Furada Mug, Dream Flowers, Fitness Team, Gadget, Empire of the Island, Fantasy Smiles, Plots and Enredos e Turma do Funil), the usual procession being replaced by various initiatives that take place in different areas of the city of Funchal, specifically on the central plate of Avenida Arriaga, Largo da Restauração, Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro and Praça do Gente, the latter more linked to the Wine Festival.

Tickets for the performances will be available free of charge for tourists and the general population at the information booths on Avenida Arriaga and Vidamar, but will be limited to the capacity of each space (8,850 seats).

Regional Flowers and Flavors Market – September 3 to 27

Local: Placa Central da Av. Arriaga

The flower market allows the public to discover the innumerable floral and decorative species that exist in Madeira. This space has 10 wooden houses, which will house traders of flowers and regional products.

In order to guarantee respect for the distance and hygiene regulations dictated by the health authorities (IASAUDE and DGS), circulation corridors will be created for the public that allow visitors to safely navigate the different areas of Avenida Arriaga. Therefore, locals and visitors can buy flowers here (safely) in a picturesque and traditional setting.

In addition to the flowers, some of the regional products will be present.

Exhibition of Embroidery and Regional Crafts of Madeira – by IVBAM – September 3 to 27

Location: between headquarters and the Golden Gate Café

Concerts in the Plato Central of Av. Arriaga – September 3 to 27

Madeira Wine Lounge – from September 3 to 27

Location: People’s Square
Wine tasting with the presence of regional producers with tasting of regional snacks in a space with a lounge atmosphere and live concerts.

This space will have three specific areas: one dedicated to Wine, with space for the sale of regional producers and wine tasting; another for musical performances and the respective stage; and also a gastronomy area.

Wall of Hope – September 5

Place: Municipality Square
Following the tradition dating back to 1979, children will be able to place a flower on the ‘Wall of Hope’ this year, without the usual ceremony and courtship with the schools, but individually accompanied by their families.

Flower group performances – September 4, 5, 6 and 19, 20 (two weekends)

Location: in various areas of Funchal
The Allegorical Flower Parade, this year will give rise to the performances of the different groups that usually parade in said parade. Over two weekends, and with a small number of participants, these performances, which have the flower as the main theme, will take place in various places in Funchal, in a true celebration of the innumerable floral species that bloom throughout of the year for the entire Region.

Flower Show – September 3 to 27

Location: Praça da Restauração
The Flower Show, which has its origin in the event that took place in the 1950s at the Ateneu Comercial do Funchal, will continue, with a change of location to Praça da Restauração, next to the Central Plate.

In this space you can appreciate and value the most beautiful specimens of flowers, of the most varied types, produced throughout Madeira, which are developed with all the care and dedication on the part of its growers.

The flowers exhibited are evaluated in their different categories by a specialized jury, awarding the best specimens.

Floral Rugs – September 3-27

Location: in various areas of Funchal
The tradition of building floral carpets proliferates throughout the island and originates in the decoration of religious processions.

Thanks to their undeniable beauty and meticulousness, for a few years now, floral carpets became evident on the occasion of the Flower Festival, repeating this year in this event that exceptionally combines the Flower Festival with the Wine Festival.

Madeira Flower Collection – September 12 and 13

Location: Pier 8

Cais 8 is preparing to receive the 2nd edition of the ‘Madeira Flower Collection’ initiative, which associates fashion with one of the most important tourist posters in the Region.

Organized by the Association of Young Entrepreneurs of Madeira (AJEM), the ‘Madeira Flower Collection’ has the presence of 18 creators, who, inspired by the unique environment of flowers, will parade their innovative proposals, with freedom of materials and tissues.

In addition to the fashion contest, which will select, award and value 9 of the participating designers, 4 more than in the previous edition. In this edition, the childish aspect will be a novelty.

In a pandemic context, the event is organized in order to respect the rules and protection measures, especially in terms of social distance, dividing the presence of the stylists over two days and controlling the entry of the number of spectators.

Flower concerts – September 24 to 27

Concerts and entertainment in emblematic spaces inside and outside of Funchal.

During this event, musical concerts will be held in Funchal and other emblematic places on the island of Madeira in order to decentralize the festivities and reinforce the entertainment offer.
