The news is brought forward this Monday by Jornal de Notícias (JN), which contacted the association that represents companies in the sector.

According to that source, the raw material that could serve the national processing industries ended up going to China, a less demanding market in terms of proof of life and quality of pine.

The newspaper said that as a result of the October 2017 fires – when it was urgent to cut the burned pines to take advantage of their quality – loggers met with foreign traders, investigating the possibility of selling the burned wood to the market. International

The JN also explains that 33 burned wood parks were created to receive one million tons. However, these only registered 158,318 tons, with the right to state support, according to data from the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF), which says it does not know the final destination of the wood.

The Leiria National Forest, also known as Pinhal de Leiria and Pinhal do Rei, is owned by the State. It has 11,062 hectares and occupies two thirds of the municipality of Marinha Grande. The main species is the maritime pine.

In the fire of October 15, 2017, 9,480 hectares of surface were burned, equivalent to 54% of the municipality’s territory and 86% of the Leiria National Forest.
