The maintenance machines were stopped a month after the railway accident in Soure

The 50 drains will only be able to circulate when new safety and prevention measures are implemented.

No maintenance machine has been on the national rail network for a month. IP – Infrastructures of Portugal ordered the removal of this material on July 31 after one of these vehicles (known as a dresina) was hit by an Alfa Pendular in Soure at 190 km / h. The accident resulted in the death of the two IP employees who were driving the maintenance vehicle and left eight more injured than initially indicated.

The railway administrator expects the removal of the traffic ban on a total of 50 track machines, imposed on August 3. As long as the drains do not have an automatic speed protection system, as all passenger and freight trains do, IP will have to implement more security measures, according to the Institute of Mobility and Transportation, the national security authority. railway.

Redundancy system

That day, IP presented a proposal to modify the regulations for the circulation of tracked machines on lines with a speed control system. The company wants to immediately introduce a redundancy mechanism for these vehicles: in addition to the green light, they can only enter the train line and proceed to the next station after a “new authorization from the operational command center”, such as This is the case on lines without the speed control system.

This measure is cost-free, gives more safety to its workers and could have been implemented long before the Soure accident. In 2018, experts from the Office for the Prevention and Investigation of Rail Accidents (GPIAAF) warned that the risk of improper overtaking of the signal “is 20 times higher” in an IP machine than in the trains of railway operators. The red light had passed 15 times between 2010 and 2017.

The infrastructure manager hopes, “soon”, to resume the activity of the tracked machines, as soon as it obtains the authorization of IMT, points the official source of the company to JN / Dinheiro Vivo. IP is also “finalizing” the process of purchasing the security system for its vehicles.

Initially, this accident had caused 43 injuries. But there are eight more occupants who were physically and / or psychologically affected, according to CP.

Injured passengers should contact CP

CP assures that, “regardless of whether it is its responsibility or that of third parties”, it has taken out civil liability insurance and is compensating the passengers affected by the accident. There are about three dozen processes. CP recommends that injured clients “contact the company, state their situation and the desired compensation. This request is subject to analysis and response by the CP Law Office.” Tickets have already been returned to at least 443 passengers who were left without a trip due to the nearly two-day outage on the Northern Line after the accident. There are about a hundred pending cases.
