Socialist Ana Gomes has not yet decided whether to proceed with a candidacy for the presidency of the Republic, but the final decision is expected to be announced shortly.

“I was doing this reflection together with my husband when he got sick and died. I had to continue this reflection under other conditions, alone. What I can say is that I am coming to an end and I will soon communicate the result of that reflection ”, he said this Sunday night, upon returning his comment to SIC Notícias.

Ana Gomes also said that she does not renounce to make this assessment: “When I speak I will explain it to you, but I will not resign myself to making this reflection.”

The former MEP revealed on May 17 that she was reflecting on a candidacy for the presidency of the Republic, after António Costa, albeit indirectly, supported a possible re-election of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

At that time, he harshly criticized the general secretary, António Costa, and the PS president, Carlos César, for the way they handled the presidential dossier and for the postponement of the party’s congress.

“They can’t make fun of us. They can’t treat the militants like idiots, ”he told PÚBLICO at the time, reiterating that he was still reflecting on the eventual candidacy.

“After listening to Costa and César, I was even amazed and decided that maybe I had to go ahead with an application,” he added.

From then on, he had several supporters inside and outside the PS, such as that of the also socialist Francisco Assis, that of Ricardo Sá Fernandes, leader of Livre, and professor Nuno Garoupa, among others.

But he also had voices against, even within his party, especially Carlos César, who affirmed that “only in a limited situation would he vote for Ana Gomes.”

In the weeks after the announcement that she was considering a candidacy for Belém, Ana Gomes always showed, along with those closest to her politically, a willingness to move forward.

However, she had to postpone the revelation on whether or not she was advancing, as well as political activity, in mid-July, after the death of her husband, Ambassador António Franco.

This Sunday he returned to the political comment on SIC Notícias and kept an eventual candidacy open.
