Five members of an airborne brigade of the GIPS, of the GNR, were surprised this Friday afternoon when they were fighting the flames in a fire in Cabeceiras de Basto. There are three serious injuries and two minor injuries.
“The wind is very strong and fickle and ended up surprising them,” Duarte Ribeiro, commander of the Cabeceirenses Volunteer Firefighters, told JN.
The five elements were finally collected by the helicopter that had transported them and transferred to the Municipal Heliport of Fafe, where they are based.
The INEM emergency services and the local firefighters were already waiting there. “We were called to help these elements who will now be transferred to the hospital,” explained Paulo Ferreira, commander of the Fafe Volunteer Firefighters.
There are three soldiers with serious burns (two of them transferred to a hospital in Porto and another to Gaia) and two with minor burns, who went to the Guimarães Hospital.
The fire, in Padornelos, Cavez, Cabeceiras de Basto, is growing in the undergrowth and is being fought by 110 firefighters, 31 vehicles and five aerial means.
