The international pilgrimage in May took place for the first time in its history without pilgrims in the Sanctuary of Fatima, due to the covid-19 pandemic, with only those directly involved in the different celebrations and some guests present.

In a message read by the Bishop of Leiria-Fatima, António Marto, Pope Francis requested a private prayer on Wednesday “for the countless victims” of the covid-19 pandemic.

“A private prayer, I ask you, while I assure you of my for the countless victims of this covid-19 pandemic and for all the dead, “said Francisco.

In the message, the leader of the Catholic Church recalled the “sick, poor and abandoned”, as well as professionals and volunteers “committed to serving them.” “We are limited, so limited, so small that an unexpected virus could easily disturb everyone and everything,” he said.

Francis also recalled the fact that this pilgrimage to Fatima was carried out without pilgrims, due to the pandemic. “Due to the circumstances, on the 13th of this month of May, you will not be able to make the pilgrimage to Cova da Iria in the usual way. I know, however, that you are also there, although only in heart and soul,” he said.

António Marto classified the letter as a “full of affection” communication, thanking the Pope for his gesture. Read more here.
