The father of the boy found dead Sunday in Peniche was the author of the crime, according to the investigative judge of the Leiria Court, who today ordered the preventive detention of the man and the girl’s stepmother.

The boy’s father is said to have committed, “as the perpetrator, a crime of qualified homicide and domestic violence,” says the statement read by a court official with the coercive measures ordered by the examining magistrate of the Leiria Court.

In the publicly read statement, the judge says the boy’s stepmother is “strongly accused” of being the author of a “homicide deemed by omission and under possible deception.”

Both defendants are suspects, co-authors, of the crime of desecrating a corpse.

The 9-year-old boy was reported missing on Thursday morning, following a complaint from his father at the GNR Peniche stand.

After three days of searching, the Leiria Judicial Police (PJ) found the boy’s body on Sunday, in a forest in Serra D’el Rei, in the municipality of Peniche, Leiria district, and arrested the father and stepmother of the victim.

The preliminary result of the boy’s autopsy points to a violent death, with head injuries and signs of suffocation.

Although there is evidence of suffocation, the 9-year-old boy will have suffered assaults in various places, causing several injuries, including to the head, according to a police source.

It is still not possible to guarantee if either of these attacks caused death or both situations simultaneously, as the causes of death will only be confirmed after laboratory tests.

This is not yet the final autopsy report, but only a preliminary examination.
