The Union of Licensed Teachers (ASPL) considered this Wednesday “early and reckless” the possible reopening of face-to-face classes for students attending the 11th and 12th years of schooling, starting on May 18.

In a statement, ASPL proposed that face-to-face classes, “to reopen this school year, be reopened only in the second half of June, if the country’s pandemic situation allows it, especially to prepare students for exams and clarify doubts” .

“Without ignoring the fact that there are students who do not have access to education through digital media, nor the enormous difficulties and demands placed on teachers in this new teaching format, the truth is that, with their proposal However, ASPL understands that these restrictions will be less than those that may result from the reopening of classroom classes on May 18, “the association said in the statement.

ASPL points out three aspects that support the proposal presented, among which the existence of students and teachers in risk groups, which makes it impossible for them to “attend face-to-face classes”, causing the “increase in inequalities among students” .

In addition to those belonging to risk groups, teachers who “provide assistance to children under the age of 12 or other ill family members” also cannot be present, and ASPL questions “whether the guardianship will be able to replace such teachers in a timely manner.”

Finally, the union association says that “the need to deploy classes so that there is the security recommended by the health authorities” also implies an overload for teachers, who “accumulate the face-to-face education of these students with distance education”, in El case of teachers who do not teach 11 and 12 years exclusively.

ASPL also considers it “absolutely essential” that “the necessary security conditions” be provided for those who have to work in person at educational institutions, including students, teachers, educational assistants or administrators.

The note concludes with ASPL recalling the possibility presented to the Ministry of Education, in March and this month, that the national exams for students of 11 and 12 years “can be suspended or canceled”.

On April 9, Prime Minister António Costa announced that, until the ninth year, the entire third period will continue with distance education, with evaluation, but without measuring tests or exams, maintaining support for families with minor children 12 years.

In secondary education, there may still be face-to-face classes in the third period for years 11 and 12 of schooling, but Costa was not sure and on Tuesday he did not confirm the information provided by Público, that this could happen on May 18

Globally, according to a report by the AFP news agency, the Covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 224,000 deaths and infected more than 3.1 million people in 193 countries and territories. About 890,000 patients were considered cured.

In Portugal, 973 of the 24,505 people confirmed to be infected died, and there are 1,470 cases recovered, according to the Directorate General of Health.
