78 more deaths and 5,839 new covid-19 infections in Portugal in the last 24 hours

This Thursday Portugal registered 78 more deaths and 5,839 new infections by covid-19 in the last 24 hours, according to the daily bulletin of the General Directorate of Health (DGS).

This is the second worst record of deaths from covid-19 and new cases of infection in 24 hours since the pandemic began in March.

Of the 78 deaths registered in the last 24 hours, 45 occurred in the North, 25 in the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region, six in the Center and two in the Alentejo. Among the fatal victims is a man between 30 and 39 years old.

The North region continues to register the highest number of new cases, with 3,567 more in the last 24 hours, with a total of 97,624, and now there are 1,459 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

In the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, another 1,345 new cases of infection were reported, representing 73,281 cases and 1,206 deaths from covid-19.

In the Central region, there were 749 more cases of infection, representing a total of 18,508 cases and 395 deaths.

In Alentejo, 56 new infections were registered, for a total of 3,741 cases and 73 deaths.

The Algarve region today reported 77 more cases of infection, now totaling 3,715 cases and 31 deaths.

In the Autonomous Region of the Azores, 29 new cases were registered in the last 24 hours, adding 542 detected infections and 15 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Madeira registered 16 more cases, representing 600 infections and two deaths.

Hospitalizations with a new record

There are currently 2,794 people hospitalized, nine more than yesterday, 383 of whom are in intensive care units, eight fewer than yesterday.

Health officials have 89,675 contacts under surveillance, 568 more than Wednesday.

In the last 24 hours, 3,336 additional patients were considered recovered, out of a total of 113,689, since the start of the pandemic.

In total, according to DGS data, Portugal has already registered 3,181 deaths and 198,011 cases of infection by the new coronavirus, with 81,141 active cases today, 2,425 more than on Wednesday.
