There are another 5,839 cases and 78 more deaths from covid-19 in the last 24 hours in Portugal, according to data from the bulletin of the General Directorate of Health (DGS) this Thursday (November 12).
It is the second day with the most deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, after the 82 registered yesterday, and the second day with the most cases, the record still being the 6640 counted on November 7. On the 4th, the bulletin pointed to more than seven thousand cases, but that included hits from the previous days.
In the first 11 days of November (this bulletin refers to the data counted until Wednesday), 585 people have already died from covid-19, more than in the entire month of October, when 567 deaths were registered.
In total, since the beginning of the pandemic, 198,011 cases of covid-19 and 3,181 deaths have been registered in Portugal. This Thursday, there are still more 3,336 patients recovered (there are already 113,689 since the start of the pandemic), with the number of active cases increasing 2,425, to 81,141.
According to the newsletter, there are still 2,794 people hospitalized (nine more than the day before), of which 383 (less eight) in intensive care units.
There are more than 568 contacts under surveillance by the authorities, for a total of 89,675.
The northern region continues to be the most affected, with 61% of new cases registered in 24 hours. There are more than 3,567 cases, in addition to 45 of the 78 deaths (58%). In Lisbon and the Tagus Valley there are more than 1,345 cases and 25 deaths. In the Center there are 749 new cases and six deaths. It is in Alentejo where the two remaining deaths are registered, with 56 more confirmed cases. In the Algarve, there are 77 new infections.
On the islands, there are 29 new cases in the Azores and another 16 in Madeira.
Of the 78 deaths, one is from a man between the ages of 30 and 39, only the sixth in this age group since the start of the pandemic. There are also three deaths in the age group 50 to 59 years, plus five between 60 and 69 years, 19 between 70 and 79 years and the remaining 50 over 80 years.
The pandemic affects Christmas and the New Year
Ice rinks, concerts, multimedia shows, fireworks, in some cases even the traditional giant trees: Christmas 2020 will be little shown in public space. The streetlights are saved, the only memory of Christmas past that will remain unchanged in 2020.
In Lisbon, the traditional Christmas tree is already being installed in Terreiro do Paço and the lights are expected to turn on in the last week of this month, but there will be no official opening to avoid crowds. And for the new year there is a certainty: the usual concert will not be held in Terreiro do Paço, which brings together thousands of people on the last night of the year.

What are the most contagious places?
The subway, restaurants, gyms, cafes, hotels or religious centers are the places where there is a greater risk of contagion with the new coronavirus. This was the conclusion of an American study published in the journal Nature, after analyzing data from 98 million people in ten of the major US cities with the highest number of COVID-19 cases and deaths and crossing them with reported infections in these regions.
“There are smaller places, where there are more people and where they stay longer,” said Jure Leskovec, co-author of the study and professor at Stanford University in the US, and explained that “restaurants, gyms and cafes are among 10% of the sites that seem to cause about 80% of infections. ” This same person advises reducing the capacity of the establishments to 20%, instead of closing them to mitigate the SARS-CoV-2 transmission curve.
In Portugal, however, the authorities indicate that most infections are due to family contacts.
Global pandemic numbers
The pandemic caused by the new coronavirus has killed at least 1,285,160 people around the world since the first case was reported in China, according to the daily AFP report.
