This Sunday, Portugal registered 4,788 cases of covid-19. In the last 24 hours, 73 people have died, when the number of hospitalized patients is at its highest point: 3,151.
It is Sunday and the pandemic appears to have slowed down. The figures now released by the General Directorate of Health (DGS), collected until midnight on Saturday, show a drop among the newly infected to a lower level than the previous Sunday. The 4,788 positive cases identified in the DGS document, in addition to a decrease of 1,247 infections compared to the 6,035 infections on day 15, also represent the lowest record of the past 11 days, with the total infected now at 260,758.
In the past 24 hours, deaths totaled 3,897, with 73 more lives lost to the disease: 51 people were over 80 years old (30 men and 21 women), 13 were between 70 and 79 years old (eight men and five women), eight were between 60 and 69 years old (seven men and one woman) and one person between 50 and 59 years old (one man).
The Health Minister admitted on Saturday that the situation in hospitals is difficult. On Sunday, the figures show it: there are 3,151 hospitalized patients (126 more than the day before) and 491 most seriously ill, and six more are admitted to intensive care units on Saturday.
Break in the North and Lisbon and increase in cases in the Center, compared to the previous Sunday
The North Region continues to be the most affected, registering 3,091 additional cases, for a cumulative of 135,363 infections since the epidemic was detected in Portugal, on March 2.
From Sunday to Sunday, a breakdown of new infections was recorded in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley Region (RLVT), which fell below 1,000 cases for the second time in 15 days, today, with 844 new cases, 293 fewer than 1137 on the 15th.
In the Central Region, instead of falling compared to the previous Sunday, there was an increase, with 637 new cases registered, a total of 25,013 since the beginning of the pandemic.
Alentejo and Algarve also registered an increase in cases. In the first case, today there are 112, 50 more than the 72 of the previous Sunday, for a cumulative of 5,169. In the southernmost part of the country, the increase was 73 cases, while the total is already 4679.
On the islands, there was a decrease in new cases in both archipelagos. In the Azores, 18 new infections were noted, eight less than the 26 of the previous Sunday (779 in total), while in Madeira the decrease was less: from 16 to 13, minus three, therefore, from one Sunday to another.
