70% of intensive care beds in the north are already occupied

The occupancy of beds dedicated to covid-19 in northern hospitals reached 61% in the middle of this week, in the Valencia ward and 70% in the case of intensive care, according to the Regional Health Administration.

In a written response sent to Lusa, the Northern Regional Health Administration (ARS-N) said that hospitals in the region have 464 nursing beds dedicated to covid-19, of which 285 were occupied on Wednesday (approximately 61% ).

In the Intensive Care Units (ICU), of the 81 beds assigned to the disease, 57 were occupied the same day, which corresponds to an occupation close to 70%.

According to ARS-N, in this region the installed capacity for all pathologies is 5,489 nursing beds and 308 intensive care beds, in a total of 16 health facilities (nine hospitals, four hospitals and three local health units) .

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 1.1 million deaths and 39.3 million additional cases of infection worldwide, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

In Portugal, 2,162 people died from 98,055 confirmed cases of infection, according to the most recent bulletin from the Directorate General of Health.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.

After Europe succeeded China as the center of the pandemic in February, the American continent is now the one with the most confirmed cases and the most deaths.
